Avoiding Doomsday? according to news.com.au 13 September 2013 in an article entitled “Geniuses predict how the world will end, and how to avoid it”. A group of scientists and academics from Oxford, Imperial, Harvard and Berkeley Universities have set up the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER), which will “draw up some real-life doomsday scenarios - and work out how mankind could avoid being wiped out”. The group includes physicist Stephen Hawking, Astronomer Royal Martin Rees, Cambridge philosopher Professor Huw Price, and Jaan Tallinn, one of the people behind internet phone service Skype. Martin Rees explained: “In future decades, events with low probability but catastrophic consequences may loom high on the political agenda. That’s why some of us in Cambridge - both natural and social scientists - plan, with colleagues at Oxford and elsewhere, to inaugurate a research programme to compile a more complete register of these ‘existential risks’, and to assess how to enhance resilience against the more credible ones”. Their list of likely world-ending scenarios includes cyber- and bio-terrorism, various types of war, including nuclear, epidemics, extreme weather, asteroids, such as the one believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs, and rogue computers developing minds of their own.

According to the Centre’s website: “Our goal is to steer a small fraction of Cambridge’s great intellectual resources, and of the reputation built on its past and present scientific pre-eminence, to the task of ensuring that our own species has a long-term future. (In the process, we hope to make it a little more certain that we humans will be around to celebrate the University’s own millennium, now less than two centuries hence.)”

Editorial Comment: We predict they won’t succeed and they will waste millions trying, and yet they could find the answer by spending a few British pounds on a New Testament and reading it. The One who created the earth, the Lord Jesus Christ, has told us clearly that the world will end when He returns both to judge the rebellious human race, and to destroy the present world by fire. He was emphatic that no-one knows the day this will happen, but also dogmatic that we can be prepared for it because Christ came to earth as the man Jesus, He was crucified just outside Jerusalem and rose again to pay the penalty for our rebellion against him, so all who repent of their rebellion and put their trust in Christ will spend eternity with him in His new creation – the new heavens and earth. Therefore, Christians have no need to fear the end of this world. However, for those who ignore Christ’s warning there will be judgement and condemnation, and no amount of “past and present scientific pre-eminence” will get anyone out of it.
